Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage
Home to some 60 or more elephant, Pinnawela is an
orphanage situated about 90Km from Colombo. A place you will really
enjoy and never forget. Most of these elephants are accustomed to human
visitors and are harmless. Bathing time at Maha Oya, in front of the
orphanage, is at 10.00am and 2.00pm. Feeding time is about an hour
earlier. The orphanage now has the largest captive herd of elephants in
the entire world and according to reports it has become the most
successful elephant breeding centre as well.

Sigiriya
Sigiriya is the home to the “Fortress in the Sky” a
5th century AD fortress which is perhaps the most fantastic single
wonder of the Island. It is also known as Lion Rock because of the huge
lion which used to stand guard at the entrance to the fortress. At the
top of the rock, some 200meters high, is a complex system of water
gardens – claimed to be the first of its kind in Asia. The fortress was
once the palace of its creator King Kashyapa. |
Dambulla
Dambulla is famous for Sri Lanka’s finest cave temples –
built by King Valagam Bahu (104 – 76BC). The caves have a mixture of
religious and secular paintings, sculptures and more than 130 Buddha
statues. The ceiling too is covered with frescoes which depict great
events in the life of the Buddha, and landmarks in the history of the
Sinhala people.
Spice Garden at Matale
24km north of Kandy is the small town of Matale. Visit a
spice garden in Matale to see many different types of spices Sri Lanka
is famous for. You will be introduced to different spices and shown how
some of these spices are grown and processed. You will also be able to
purchase spices.
Batik Factory
You will get to see the printing of batiks. The shop contains a wide variety of Batik items.
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
"Sri Dalada Maligawa" or Temple of the Sacred Tooth is
one of the main attractions in Kandy. This is the centre of Kandy and
the Sacred Tooth of Budda is the heart of it. The Dalada Maligawa is one
of the most sacred Buddhist temples' for Buddhists around the world.
Throughout history the sacred Tooth has been guarded by kings - first in
India (sixteen centuries ago) and then moved from one capital to
another, always with the king. Once you enter the temple you will see
the splendor with which it is decorated. Please note that visitors are
required to remove any hats, caps, scarves or any form of head gear.
Also women are required to wear suitable clothing.
Cultural Show
In the evening watch a cultural show featuring all the exotic traditional dances of Sri Lanka.

Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya
The final visit for the day will be to the beautiful
botanical ¬gardens in Peradeniya, Kandy. The botanical gardens date back
to 1371 when King Wickramabahu III ascended the thrown and kept court
at Peradeniya near the Mahaweli river.
However the present botanic gardens at Peradeniya were established in
1821. Occupying 146 acres, it has about 4,000 species of plants
including palms, orchids, gymnosperms and a great variety of beautiful
flowering plants. |

The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage,
established in 1975, commenced with seven orphans. Today some of these
orphans enjoy the fortune of seeing their grandchildren born in the same
location. The original objective of establishing the orphanage inclined
more towards tourism, but is soon became a conservation and educational
centre. With the help of local and foreign elephant experts, Pinnawela
started a scientific captivebreeding programme for elephants. The free
movement of the herd enhanced the chances for respective individuals of
both sexes to get together and mate. The nearby river played a dominant
role in this regard, and in 1984, the first baby of Pinnawela was born.
The success story of Pinnawela has drawn the attention of scientists
from all over the world. A considerable number of books and research
articles on Pinnawela have been published in several languages. The
members of the Pinnawela herd have been filmed, videoed and photographed
thousands of times by professionals.
Kandalama Hotel Surrounding, free for
bird watching around Kandalama. The 55 acre forest around the Kandalama
tank where the hotel is situated has a variety of trees - 100 years or
more in age, with medicinal plants and a rich and varied bird life.
Around 90 varieties of birds including migrants - babbler, blue
flycatcher, oriole, paradise flycatcher, warbler, wagtail, barbet,
bee-eater, Brahmin kite, owl, teal, pelican, make their home here. |

Sigiriya Rock Fortress,
which is a world heritage site, built by King Kashyapa (477-495 AD). The
'Lion Rock' is a citadel of unusual beauty rising 200 metres from the
scrub jungle. The rock was the innermost stronghold of the 70 hectare
fortified town. A moat, rampart, and extensive gardens including the
renowned water gardens ring the base of the rock. Visit the
world-renowned frescoes of the 'Heavenly Maidens' of Sigiriya, which are
in a sheltered pocket of the rock approached by a spiral stairway.
These frescoes are painted in earth pigments on plaster.
Polonnaruwa, which was the 2nd capital
city of Sri Lanka built in the 11th and 12th centuries AD, and which is a
world heritage site. Here you can see the ruins of the Royal Palace,
the Gal Viharaya where 4 splendid statues of the Buddha in 'Upright',
'Sedentary' and 'Recumbent' postures carved out of rock could be seen,
the Audience Hall, the Lotus Bath, the statue of king Parakramabahu, and
the Parakrama Samudraya - a lake built by King Parakramabahu the great.
There are also monuments of famous places of worship such as the Shiva
Temple, the Lankathilake, the Watadage, the Galpotha, the Kiri Vehera
and the remains of a former Temple of the Tooth Relic. |

Dambulla Cave Temple, is a part of the
Cultural Triangle declared by UNESCO is on the main road from Sigiriya
to Kandy about 19Km from Sigiriya. There are over 80 caves in the
surrounding and some of them have been used by the monks as meditation
locations. Major attractions are spread over 5 caves, which contain the
statues and the paintings. Since it's founding in the 1 century BC by
King Valagamba, many improvements and additions have been carried out to
the sculptures and paintings over the years. Hindu statues are believed
to be of the 12 century AD and the latest paintings are of the late
18-century. The temple is a perfect location to view evolution of the
ancient Sri Lankan arts. Dambulla is a unique and important historical
site because of the amalgamation of the material from many eras.

Temple of Tooth, the main attraction of
the city and also the most sacred Buddhist establishment in Sri Lanka is

the fall of the Kandy kingdom. A golden canopy was added recently. Daily
rituals are being carried out at various offering times to the shrine. A
dress code applies for entering the temple. The magnificence has been
enhanced by the octagonal pavilion. |

Peradeniya botanical garden
was first built as a pleasure garden by a Sinhala king and was expanded
by the British. It is 147 acres in extent and provides an amazing
variety of trees, plants and flowers. There after do a city tour of
Kandy.
Kandy City was the last capital of the
Sri Lankan kings and is a World Heritage Site. The name "Kandy" conjures
visions of splendor and magnificence. Many of the legends, traditions
and folklore are still lovingly kept alive. Drive around the Kandy lake
built by the last Sinhala king, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in 1798. Visit
the Kandy town and bazaar, the arts and crafts centre, a gem museum and a
lapidary. |
